Under the pretext of erasing her criminal record and ensuring her safety, Mehran proposes/forces marriage upon Shireen. World of Light (Underground): Atefeh and Shireen escape the hijab-bound and rule-bound school life to secret underground parties in private apartments at night. Glamorous outfits, Western music, alcohol, drugs, and explicit sexual exploration symbolize their rebellious freedom. Their romantic relationship is depicted as the purest and most intense ecstasy in contrast to an oppressive reality.

World of Darkness (Aboveground): All this freedom is abruptly crushed through the Morality Police and Atefeh’s brother Mehran. Mehran’s transformation into a devout religious enforcer and his monitoring acts visually demonstrate how Iran's state surveillance system penetrates even the most intimate space of 'home.'

As the title suggests, the film emphasizes that the love of the two protagonists collapses not because it is inherently 'wrong,' but due to the surrounding environment (Circumstance).

Curse of Class: Though both loved equally, Shireen, as an orphan, lacked the 'financial protection' Atefeh enjoyed. When arrested, Atefeh was freed by her parents’ power, while Shireen was treated as a prostitute and terrified. Role of Mehran: Mehran is more than a jealous brother. He replaces addiction with religious fanaticism, acting as an agent of an oppressive system. The film’s ending is deeply bittersweet. Atefeh chooses freedom at the cost of parting from Shireen and flees to Dubai, while Shireen remains in Iran, losing her love and becoming Mehran’s wife.

Partial Victory: Atefeh’s escape may be a personal victory, but she never attains the "freedom with her beloved" she truly desired. This tragedy illustrates that under oppressive circumstances, the only option for youth is escape.
